Reinventing the Basic Plot-line Wheel

All stories tend to fall into seven classic categories: Overcoming the Monster (Moby Dick), Rags to Riches (Jane Eyre), The Quest (The Lord of the Rings), Voyage and Return (The Odyssey), Comedy (Twelfth Night), Tragedy (Anna Karenina), and Rebirth (The Secret Garden). Old tropes are constantly being recycled into new forms, and it’s what you do with it that makes your story sing. In this session for the Eastern Shore Writers Association (ESWA), I’ll be talking about how a well-known classic can be reimagined in a contemporary context that speaks to today’s issues.
